Instructions:
- Prepare Apples:
- Wash and dry the apples thoroughly. Removing all moisture is crucial to ensure the candy coating sticks properly.
- Remove the stems and insert wooden sticks into the top of each apple.
- Prepare Candy Coating:
- In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, corn syrup, and water.
- Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves.
- Once the sugar is fully dissolved, stop stirring and let the mixture come to a boil.
- Use a candy thermometer to monitor the temperature and heat the mixture until it reaches 300°F (the hard crack stage).
- Add Color and Flavor:
- Once the temperature reaches 300°F, remove the saucepan from the heat.
- Stir in the red food coloring and vanilla extract (if using) until the mixture is well combined.
- Coat the Apples:
- Working quickly, dip each apple into the candy mixture, swirling it to coat evenly.
- Let any excess candy drip back into the pot, and place the apples on a parchment-lined baking sheet to cool.
- If desired, sprinkle holiday sprinkles onto the apples while the coating is still warm to add a festive touch.
- Cool and Set:
- Allow the candy-coated apples to cool completely and harden before serving.
- Serve:
- Once fully set, your Christmas candy apples are ready to enjoy or share with friends and family!
