Instructions:
- Prepare the Batter:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- Gradually add the milk to the dry ingredients, stirring until a thick batter forms.
- Fold in the thinly sliced onions, making sure they are evenly coated with the batter.
- Heat the Oil:
- In a large skillet or deep fryer, heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- If you don’t have a thermometer, test the oil by dropping a small amount of batter into it; the batter should sizzle and rise to the surface.
- Fry the Fritters:
- Using a tablespoon or small scoop, carefully drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, flattening them slightly with the back of the spoon.
- Fry the fritters for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
- Remove the fritters from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
- Serve:
- Serve the Amish Onion Fritters warm, either on their own or with a dipping sauce of your choice.
